Parkview Medical Center leading the way for robotic surgery

(Pueblo, CO) –  Parkview Medical Center embraced the cutting edge of surgical technology when it began offering robotic surgery on the da Vinci Xi surgical robotic system in 2015.

Now Parkview will be helping expand those surgical techniques by serving as a case observation site for the da Vinci system.

Parkview Medical Center is one of just 12 sites in the Western United States to offer case observations for colorectal surgeries on the da Vinci.

That means surgeons from throughout the U.S. will be coming to Pueblo to observe Dr. Sandeep Vijan’s work on colorectal surgeries, a crucial step in educating surgeons on how to use the state-of-the-art technology in their own practice.

“We are proud to offer cutting edge robotic surgery at Parkview Medical Center,” said Dr. Vijan. “This technology allows my patients to experience much less pain and a significantly quicker recovery from major abdominal surgeries. It is a quantum leap forward in the surgical care of our patients in Pueblo County and throughout southern Colorado.”

Typically less than 2 percent of all active surgeons in the U.S. qualify for case observations on the da Vinci system and there are less than 250 sites in the U.S. to offer case observations across multiple surgical specialties.

“Being part of an elite group of hospitals able to provide case observations on the da Vinci system is reflective of the quality of the surgeons employing this technology at Parkview Medical Center.  This also exemplifies Parkview’s continued commitment to bring cutting edge technology to our patients and community,” said Parkview Medical Center CEO Mike Baxter.

The da Vinci Xi features four mechanical arms that are controlled by the surgeon who is viewing the work being done on the patient in real time on a 3-D display. It also allows for a single-site surgery for some procedures so as to minimize scarring for the patient.

The latest model of da Vinci, the Xi provides more fluidity and dexterity in its controls. There are 18 surgeons utilizing the da Vinci Xi.  Parkview Medical Center currently has two Xi platforms in use at the hospital and specialties include general surgery, urology, OB/GYN and cardiothoracic surgery.
