The Parkview laboratory performs testing on blood, tissues, urine, and other body fluids in order to provide information for the care and diagnosis of our patients.  We are committed to providing quality laboratory data so that our physicians and healthcare providers can make decisions based on the best information possible.  The laboratory is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB).  Our staff are individually certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology's Board of Certification (ASCP BOC).  We offer testing in the areas of clinical chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, body fluids, blood bank, microbiology, histology, reference lab testing, and more.  If you have a question about your lab testing you can contact us at 719-584-4405 or you can visit the Lab Tests Online website

Do you need to have your blood drawn?

At Parkview Medical Center, our competent, caring phlebotomists can draw your blood 24 hours a day. If you need to have your blood drawn, please visit Parkview admissions first.  The easiest way to get there is through the main entrance during the day and through the ER entrance at night.  We do have an outpatient drawing station that is located near admissions and is typically open between 8am and 4pm Monday through Friday.  This is the most convenient way to have your blood drawn.  If you have a question, don't hesitate to call us at 719-584-4405.

Do you have a specimen that you need to deliver to the lab?

It is highly recommend that you register with Parkview admissions before you collect any specimens at home.  Some specimens expire rapidly after collection.  Registering with admissions first can prevent you from having to recollect your specimen.  Admissions can also provide you with directions to drop off your specimen to the lab.

Clinical Chemistry

Supervisor:  Lori Mutz BS, MLS(ASCP)CM

This area of the lab is dedicated to performing chemistry testing on blood and body fluids.  In this part of the lab our staff:

  • evaluate patient specimens to ensure accurate results
  • perform chemistry testing on blood serum, plasma, and other body fluids
  • interpret the results of testing and troubleshoot erroneous results to ensure accurate testing
  • maintain the instruments to keep them in working condition and troubleshoot instruments that are not working properly
  • use statistical tools to evaluate quality control results and ensure accurate results

Hematology

Supervisor:  Lori Mutz BS, MLS(ASCP)CM

This area of the lab is dedicated to performing testing on cells in blood and body fluids.  In this part of the lab our staff:

  • perform automated CBC (complete blood count) testing using the Coulter instrument to quantify and describe the cells present in the patient's blood
  • interpret the results of CBC testing and make a Wright-stained blood smear for abnormal results
  • view and interpret stained blood smears to describe the cell types and morphology (shapes) of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets in order to aid in the diagnosis of diseases like anemia and leukemia
  • perform testing for malaria and other blood parasites
  • perform automated cell counting on additional body fluids like cerebrospinal fluid
  • perform coagulation testing like PT/INR, PTT, and D-Dimer

Urinalysis and Body Fluids

Supervisor:  Lori Mutz BS, MLS(ASCP)CM

This area of the lab is dedicated to performing chemistry and microscopic testing on urine and body fluids.  In this area of the lab our staff:

  • perform automated chemistry testing on urine specimens
  • perform automated and manual microscopic analysis of urine to describe the particulate matter present
  • interpret the results of testing and perform manual confirmatory testing as needed to aid in the accurate reporting of results
  • refer results that suggest urinary tract infection to microbiology for culture
  • perform manual cell counts and other testing on body fluids like cerebrospinal fluid
  • maintain the instrumentation and troubleshoot when the instrument is not working properly
  • perform miscellaneous testing for diseases like HIV and congestive heart failure

Blood Bank

Supervisor:  Peggy Pechek, BS, MT(ASCP)

This area of the lab is dedicated to performing testing in serology and transfusion medicine.  In this part of the lab our staff:

  • perform and interpret blood type testing
  • perform and interpret testing for unexpected antibodies in patient serum that could cause blood product incompatibility or other disease states like hemolytic disease of the newborn
  • cross-match blood products to patient blood
  • prepare products like packed red blood cells, platelets, fresh frozen plasma, and cryoprecipitate for transfusion to the patient
  • implement strategies to achieve 100% accuracy in the transfusion of compatible blood products to patients
  • perform and interpret serology testing to aid in the diagnosis of diseases like syphilis

Microbiology

Supervisor:  Lana Fairbanks BS, MLS(ASCP)CM, SM(ASCP)CM

This area of the lab is dedicated to performing testing for bacteria, fungi, and parasites.  In this part of the lab our staff:

  • order and set-up cultures from specimens
  • perform rapid testing on specimens
  • perform and interpret gram stains and other types of stains
  • interpret the results of cultures for bacteria and fungi
  • set-up and interpret additional testing to aid in the I.D. of organisms
  • perform antibiotic sensitivity testing
  • perform testing for parasites
  • utilize molecular testing to aid in the detection of microorganisms
  • perform and interpret quality control testing to ensure accurate results

Histology
