Blood pressure measurements, body mass index, diabetes screenings, lipid profiles and bone density evaluation are a few of the screenings that are offered. Additionally, individual counseling, and providing clients with suggestions for improving their health and preventing disease, are emphasized.

Parkview Medical Center participates in dozens of smaller venues within our community on an annual basis and continues to serve as a valuable resource to our clients.

Healthy Body, Healthy Spirit
The Healthy Body, Healthy Spirit – Health Disparities Grant was funded through the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and these efforts were lead by Colorado State University-Pueblo. The uninsured, underinsured, Hispanic, Latino and minority populations were targeted to identify and reduce the onset of type two diabetes in Pueblo. Parkview Medical Center in collaboration with CSU-Pueblo screened approximately 477 residents to identify high-risk individuals for type two diabetes.

Pueblo City Schools- Parkview School Based Wellness Centers
The Parkview School-Based Wellness Center (SBWC) serves the healthcare needs of the students in Pueblo City Schools District 60 (Central & East High Schools and Freed & Risley Middle School) regardless of their ability to pay. It is the mission of the Parkview SBWC program to provide quality service and improve access for school-aged youth in order to improve their health and wellness. The SBWC had over 9,000 contacts with students within the centers during the 2006-2007 school year. The staff also presented health education on a variety of topics to students within the classroom setting. Since opening in the spring of 1995, the centers have provided more than 156,000 healthcare visits. The SBWC offers youth a safe and convenient place to seek healthcare. Twenty-five percent of the children seen by SBWC have no healthcare coverage and over 30 percent reported no healthcare provider other than the SBWC. In addition to providing kids with needed healthcare, the centers keep kids in school and work with the staff to remove physical or emotional barriers to learning. Less than four percent of kids seen in the SBWC are sent home due to illness.

Diabetes – Steps to a Healthier Pueblo
Steps to a Healthier Pueblo is in its fifth year of a five year Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sponsored grant addressing diabetes, obesity, physical activity, nutrition, asthma and smoking in our community. The Diabetes Care Center at Parkview represents the medical center on the Steps Executive Committee which is composed of multiple community partners. The Pueblo City-County Health Department is the lead agency for this grant. From a diabetes perspective, grant activities are focused on helping Puebloans reduce their diabetes risk through healthy lifestyle choices and diabetes prevention classes. An additional focus is providing diabetes self-management education for the under and uninsured who already have the disease. These efforts are enhanced by collaboration with the Pueblo Community Diabetes Project (PCDP) and Colorado State University – Pueblo (CSU-P). Due to a Caring for Colorado grant our diabetes prevention work has been secured through 2008.
