Community Health Initiatives
Prevention, Promotion and Partnerships
The mission of the Health Initiatives Department is to promote the health and well-being of our community through a variety of programs and services that reach across the life span.

KidsvilleŽ Express
This mobile injury prevention program was unveiled in August 2004 and continues to reach children across southern Colorado on a regular basis. Over 5000 children in schools, day care settings and at community events have benefited from the health and safety related lessons that the Kidsville Express brings them in a fun and interactive way.

Based on leading injuries observed in Pueblo County each year, these lessons focus on: Water Safety, fire prevention, ATV accidents, bicycle safety, gun safety, calling “911”, hand-washing, eating health, traffic safety and car/booster seats.

Kidsville Express is made possible through generous contributions from AMR, Comcast and Wilcoxson.

Teddy Bear Clinic
Now in its 7th year, the Teddy Bear Clinic is an annual event that brings hundreds of children and their families to the Pueblo Mall at the end of each summer.
Partnering with over 20 community agencies, this event is the premier safety and health fair for children ages 4-10 in southern Colorado.
Each year, the clinic focuses on different topics in response to events that have occurred locally in the previous year. 2007 was no different as the theme centered around disaster preparedness and through the support of El Pomar, Kiwanis Club of Pueblo, and the Parkview Medical Center Auxiliary, hundreds of preparedness packs were created and distributed to families in Pueblo.

Aegis Wellness Poster Program
Advocating wellness at your place of employment benefits our community in a multitude of ways and allows Parkview to partner with our Pueblo businesses in promoting health and safety among their employees.
Presently, 35 companies participate in this program. Educational posters and supportive materials promote a variety of health and safety related topics.

The Great Hospital Adventure
This live, multi-media puppet presentation introduces children between ages 4-7 to healthcare professionals.
Following the story of brother Josh, and his sister Ashley, local high school drama clubs bring the story to the stage throughout elementary schools in Pueblo and Southern Colorado. The importance of this program is twofold.

The first is to introduce younger children to the hospital setting in a non-threatening, comical way. Secondly, many children can recall that doctors and nurses are members of the healthcare team, but The Great Hospital Adventure goes further, and includes other team members including Paramedics, Physical Therapists, and Radiological Technologists.

Spirit of Women
Spirit of Women Health Network is a coalition of hospitals and healthcare providers across the nation joined together to advance the cause and business of women’s health through educational programs and initiatives.
Parkview Medical Center is proud to be 1 of only 6 hospitals in Colorado, and the only hospital in southern Colorado to be a partner in advancing the cause of women’s health.

Asthma Education Program
Huff and Puff: Children’s Asthma Education Program
Huff and Puff teaches children ages 4-10 about asthma through games, music, creative play and dialogue. Children learn how to take an active role in their care. Children are treated to a performance from two fun-loving puppets named Huff and Puff. Puff has had asthma for a long time and has learned how to control it. Huff has just been diagnosed with asthma and doesn’t know what to do. So Puff teaches Huff the Five-Step Plan of asthma management.

ASTHMA 101, is for all ages and teaches the entire family the basics about asthma, respiratory anatomy, peak flow meters, triggers, medications, management and more. This class is recommended for adults with asthma and parents of children with asthma.

Community Education Programs
Parkview Medical Center continues to pride itself in being a true resource to members of our community, and believes that promoting health is one way we can best meet the needs of our diverse population.
Tobacco cessation programs coordinated through the Pueblo City-County Health Department, Driver Safety programs for drivers over 55 in collaboration with AARP, and the ScriptSave Pharmacy Discount program are all examples of initiatives coordinated through Health Initiatives in an effort to reach out across all age groups.
