What: Spirit of Women Day of Dance
Where: Pueblo Mall, 3567 Dillon Dr., Pueblo, CO
former Steve and Barry’s space
When: Saturday, February 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

(Pueblo, CO January 28, 2009) – Put on your red shoes and dance…with Spirit! Parkview Medical Center is proud to host the 2009 Spirit of Women Day of Dance for Health on Saturday, February 28, 2009, at the Pueblo Mall, in the space formerly held by Steve and Barry’s.

Dance, Walk, Move…..even the smallest steps count. Proving that exercise can be both fun and beneficial to the heart, Day of Dance combines the fun of dancing to different forms of music with health screenings and consumer education on heart disease and other women’s health issues. Pueblo joins more than 70 other cities to simultaneously host the fifth annual National Day of Dance.

This is the second year Parkview has brought Day of Dance to Southern Colorado. You won’t want to miss interactive dance demonstrations, such as modern, tap, swing, Latin, Interpretive, Zumba, as well as a special dance demonstration from “Dancing with Pueblo Stars”. Put on your red – red shoes, red boa, red shirt and come dance away the afternoon. Good Health is just a dance away!

“Parkview is extremely excited to have Pueblo participate in this national event that is capturing the attention of women and their families to the importance of heart health,” explained Marian Heesaker, Parkview Health Initiatives Director. “Our event will encourage women to feel comfortable learning a variety of dances and having fun through camaraderie, fellowship, lively music and heart related education, all in an effort to promote health and well-being. There is a real energy when you gather hundreds of women together, and that’s what Day of Dance is all about.”

Taking place from 9 am to 2 pm on Saturday, February 28, the event at the Pueblo Mall, will include dancing, screenings, stress reduction and tips on healthy cooking from Dr. Jim Sbarbaro, as well as other activities to remind participants that heart disease prevention can be a fun and energizing experience.

Day of Dance health screenings will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Screenings will include, diabetes, blood pressure, height and weight, spirometry and cholesterol. Dance demonstrations will get the mall rocking at 11 a.m. and continue until 2 p.m.

Leading up to the event, Susan Sarandon, Felicity Huffman, Diane Sawyer and Carlos Santana will each autograph a pair of red shoes, the symbol of taking action for women’s heart health. Donated by Carlos by Carlos Santana footwear, the celebrity-autographed red shoes will be available for auction as part of the national Spirit of Women Red Shoe Initiative Auction, an online charity auction of celebrity-autographed footwear that will benefit several health organizations, including the National Stroke Association, Peripheral Arterial Disease (P.A.D.) Coalition and Carlos Santana’s Milagro Foundation. The shoes will be on display at www.redshoeinitiative.org and available for bidding from February 19 through 11:59 pm February 28 on eBay by searching “celebrity autographed red shoes”.

In the words of Carlos Santana, "Locally and nationally, Day of Dance for Health and the Red Shoe are poised to make a big difference for the health of women and children in the U.S. On behalf of all the celebrities participating, we're excited to be a part of having an important impact on women and heart disease."

Dancing can burn as many calories as swimming, walking, or riding a bike (as many as 200-400 calories per hour). If done on a regular basis as a form of exercise, many health benefits result including weight maintenance or weight loss, blood pressure and cholesterol management (lowering), increased energy, decreased sadness and depression, increased coordination and muscle strength and an overall sense of well-being. In addition, dancing can help develop new social connections as well as enhance and strengthen relationships.

Nearly 500,000 women die each year of cardiovascular disease, making it the leading cause of death for American women. One in two women will die of heart disease, yet they continue not to personalize their individual risk for cardiovascular disease.

Other Colorado cities hosting “Day of Dance” events at healthcare facilities include Denver, Greeley and Boulder.
