Parkview Medical Center Hosts “Day of Dance for Health”

Parkview inspires Southern Colorado to dance toward better health through national dance effort aimed at healthier living

Who: Parkview Medical Center
What: Spirit of Women Day of Dance
Where: Pueblo Mall, 3567 Dillon Dr., Pueblo, CO, Dillard’s Court
When: Saturday, February 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

(Pueblo, CO February 9, 2010) – Put on your red shoes and dance…with Spirit! Parkview Medical Center is proud to host the 2010 Spirit of Women Day of Dance for Health on Saturday, February 27, 2010, at the Pueblo Mall, in the Dillard’s Court.

Dance, Walk, Move…..even the smallest steps count. Proving that exercise can be both fun and beneficial to the heart, Day of Dance combines the fun of dancing to different forms of music with health screenings and community education on heart health and other health issues. Pueblo joins more than 65 other cities to simultaneously host the sixth annual National Day of Dance. Nationwide, more than 75,000 participants are expected to dance for their health in hopes of creating healthier communities.

This is the third year Parkview has brought Day of Dance to Southern Colorado. You won’t want to miss dance demonstrations and lessons from a number of local dance groups, as well as a special dance video featuring Parkview Medical Center employees. Put on your red – red shoes, red boa, red shirt and come dance away the afternoon. Good Health is just a dance away!

Nearly 500,000 women die each year of cardiovascular disease, making it the leading cause of death for American women. One in two women will die of heart disease, yet they continue not to personalize their individual risk for cardiovascular disease.

Spirit of Women focuses on dance as a way to take steps for a healthier life because dancing can burn as many calories as swimming, walking, or riding a bike (as many as 200-400 calories per hour). If done on a regular basis as a form of exercise, many health benefits result including weight maintenance or weight loss, blood pressure and cholesterol management (lowering), increased energy, decreased sadness and depression, increased coordination and muscle strength and an overall sense of well-being.

“Parkview is extremely excited to have Pueblo participate in this national event that is capturing the attention of women and their families to the importance of heart health,” explained Kirsten Taylor, Parkview Health Initiatives Director. “The Day of Dance encourages people of all ages to take an active role in their health by getting up, coming out and boogying down as a way to promote health and well-being. We are delighted to partner with a local Destination Imagination team who is working to encourage girls and young women to find beauty in themselves and keep their hearts healthy by staying true their own beat. This year’s event will be something the whole family will enjoy!”

Taking place from 9 am to 1 pm on Saturday, February 27, the event at the Pueblo Mall will include dancing, screenings, a fashion show and educational tips from Parkview Medical Center professionals, as well as other activities to remind participants that heart disease prevention can be a fun and energizing experience.

Day of Dance health screenings will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Screenings will include cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, body mass index, pulse oximetry and a cardiovascular risk assessment. Cholesterol screenings are limited to the first 100 participants. Dance demonstrations will get the mall rocking at 10:45 a.m. and continue until 1 p.m.
