Judy Fonda has been named Starlight Gala Honoree for her leadership and commitment to Parkview Medical Center as well as her generous contributions to the Pueblo community.
Judy Prendergast was born March 25, 1955 in Boulder, Colorado. The Prendergast family moved from Gunnison in 1963, when her father accepted a job at the State Hospital in Pueblo. Her family settled in Belmont and Judy graduated from Pueblo East High School in 1973.
Shortly after graduation, she began her career at Otero Savings and Loan as a teller. Judy quickly climbed the banking ladder at Otero as a savings counselor, loan servicing clerk, mortgage loan clerk and construction loan clerk. She was promoted to Construction Loan Supervisor in 1976. It was in this position that she met her husband-to-be, Roger Fonda. They were married in 1980 and will be celebrating their 30th anniversary next June.
After several years in Construction Lending, Judy was promoted to Assistant Regional Manager, then Regional Manager of Otero’s Pueblo operations. In June of 1987, she was promoted to Vice President of Savings Operations and moved to Colorado Springs.
In early 1989, after Otero Savings had been put under the control of RTC, Judy and Chuck Stephens decided that their future employment options were very limited in the savings and loan industry. Chuck convinced Judy that they should head back to Pueblo and start their own mortgage company. They rented their first office space on Jerry Murphy Rd. in June of that year. By November, Premier Mortgage had hired its first employee and in January of 1990, moved to the second floor of the Colorado State Employees Credit Union to a shared space with Ed Robinson. Premier Mortgage’s business increased and the staff grew. In the fall of 1998, Premier Mortgage decided to purchase a building of their own. They made an offer on a building across the street from the Credit Union. Before the loan had even closed on this building, Premier received an attractive offer from Walgreen’s to buy the property. This was exciting news, but also left the business without a new office. In the midst of this planning process, tragedy struck. On February 2, 1999, Chuck passed away as the result of a heart attack. Chuck’s wife, Debi Stephens and Judy continued on with the move and started construction on a new building later that year. Premier Mortgage moved into their new office at 1700 Fortino Blvd. on May 31, 2000, which they still occupy today. At their peak in 2003, Premier had a total of 22 employees. Premier Mortgage currently has 14 employees, in addition to Debi and Judy.
In addition to running an extremely successful business, Judy also donates her time to Parkview Medical Center as well as numerous other organizations in the community. She joined the Parkview Foundation Board in 1992. After serving six years on that board, including Board Chairman, Judy joined the Parkview Medical Center Board as the Foundation liaison in 1998. She served as Treasurer, Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Medical Center Board. Judy also is currently a member of the Finance and Investment Committees. She was elected to the Health System Board in 2002 and currently serves as Vice Chairman.
Judy was elected to the Board of Directors of Pueblo Economic Development Corporation in 2000. She served as Treasurer for four years, Chair Elect and is currently the Chairman of the Board. Judy is the first female PEDCo chairperson.
Judy began volunteering at the KTSC (Channel 8) Auction in 1978. She participated in over 25 auctions and was the Auction Chairman in 1997. Currently, Judy sits on the Rocky Mountain PBS Community Advisory Board. She also served as a board member of the Pueblo Day Nursery Foundation from 2003 – 2009. Judy joined the Junior League of Pueblo in 1979 and was an active member for nearly 15 years. She is currently a sustaining member. During her time with Junior League Judy served as Treasurer, Membership Chairman, Whale of a Sale Chairman and many others.
She served as a board member of the Pueblo Country Club from 1992 to 1998, including President of the Board in 1997. Judy was the second woman to join the board and was the first female President.
She grew up skiing, swimming and camping, but now Judy enjoys playing golf with her husband and friends. Roger and Judy also spent a lot of time sailing while they were dating and in their early married life. She also loves to travel. Highlights of their travel are trips to Italy, Austria and Germany in 2005 and a trip to Pueblo’s sister city in Bergamo, Italy in 2007. The Fondas also enjoy spending time at their second home in Scottsdale, AZ.
When Judy can find spare time, she enjoys curling up with a good book and keeping up her shopaholic status. She loves to socialize and spend time with her many wonderful friends and family. Judy has three nieces and two nephews and also has two beautiful great nieces and a great nephew.
The primary mission of the Parkview Foundation is to solicit, preserve, and monitor those funds it generates for Parkview Medical Center and to assist the Medical Center in the completion of its mission, vision and values.### |
