Parkview Lab lets loose in celebration of National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week
PUEBLO, Colo. (April 18, 2008)--- Medical Laboratories are not exempt from the current shortages of qualified professionals, facing many other healthcare fields. National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week provides the profession with a unique opportunity to increase public understanding of and appreciation for, clinical laboratory personnel. National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week is celebrated April 21 through April 25.
“Survivor” and “Let’s Make a Deal”– no this is not the Sunday night TV line up. These fun and exciting games are what is on tap for the Lab Week Celebration at Parkview Medical Center. Parkview celebrates Lab Week by letting loose and showing that the laboratorians have more fun than anyone else in the hospital. The highlight at Parkview is the “Survivor Lab Week Challenge.” Just like the TV show, tribes are formed of Lab professionals and must perform challenges to gain immunity. The challenge started a month before Lab Week and now there are only 6 “survivors” remaining. They will face a challenge each day during Lab Week until only 2 remain. “Voted off” contestants will vote on the winner of the 3rd annual “Survivor Lab Week Challenge.”
“The team in the Parkview Lab looks forward to Lab Week each year, so we can let loose and have a little fun in the workplace,” explained Diann Chrisman, MT(ASCP), CLS (NCA). “It really boosts team morale.”
According to the American Society for Clinical Pathology’s Board of Registry, vacancies in laboratory staff positions are at a 12-year high. Lab Week is an opportunity to put the spotlight on clinical laboratories to see what is happening behind the scenes to combat disease. Medical laboratory professionals are the heart of the medical investigation team and their services are vital to the hospital.

There are approximately 300,000 practitioners of clinical laboratory science in the United States. Since the development of this career group in the 1920s, the clinical laboratory science professional has played an increasingly vital role in the diagnosis and prevention of disease. Today, the clinical laboratorian is a key member of a healthcare team. National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week originated in 1975 by the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science.
