Giving an Organization Life
Remarks from C.W. Smith, President/CEO
Parkview is pleased to once again, provide a report on our contributions to the health and well-being of our community. Since our founding in 1923 Parkview has delivered hundreds of millions of dollars worth of free and discounted services to the citizens of Pueblo and Southern Colorado. We support a number of community organizations thru donations and our employees serve on numerous community boards and committees. Parkview, along with our dedicated team of employees, physicians and board members, is committed to helping Pueblo grow and prosper, to continue to be a great place to live and raise a family.
Parkview Medical Center is proud to be a not-for-profit 501 (c3) corporation, governed by a local board whose mission is to provide healthcare services that are needed and that improve the health of our community. Parkview’s Board of Directors live and work in the Pueblo Community. They devote many hours of their time guiding the medical center in its efforts to enhance healthcare in Pueblo. Parkview’s mission statement and board support the delivery of safe, high quality healthcare services to this community.
As you will see from this report, Parkview provides high quality healthcare in many different ways, including recruiting and assisting physicians in developing a practice in Pueblo. We are proud to provide a skilled clinical and professional work force to assist physicians in caring for patients. Parkview is constantly seeking new technology and services that are needed in the region. In addition, we support education and training with financial and clinical support for Pueblo Community College and Colorado State University-Pueblo. We provide funding and staff for the Wellness Program with Pueblo City Schools and the School to Employment Program with District 70. This helps the community in a number of ways including access to health services, educational opportunities and employment.
Parkview Medical Center is the largest private employer in the community and directly contributes over 74 million dollars in salaries and wages to the Pueblo economy. Parkview has added over 1000 jobs, with insurance and benefits, to Pueblo in the last 20 years. Although Parkview is a not-for-profit facility, we are also the fifth largest property tax payer in Pueblo County and pay sales taxes to the City of Pueblo on construction projects within the city limits. Over the years these payments add up to millions of dollars contributed to the City and County of Pueblo.
Parkview treats patients from all over Southern Colorado and a number from neighboring states and communities. Patients of all ages find their way to our door and our well qualified staff of professionals including nurses, skilled clinical technicians, physicians and support personnel provides high quality care with state-of-the-art equipment.
The number of uninsured and underinsured is rising as is the cost of technology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare supplies and wages. These pressures, along with increased regulation and the failure of Medicaid and Medicare to maintain a payment structure that keeps pace with rising costs, make it extremely difficult for hospitals that treat a high number of these types of patients, to maintain services. In 2007, our charity care was over 28 million dollars and in 2008 we are expecting it to be over 38 million dollars. This does not include the discounts provided to Medicare and Medicaid nor those patients falling into the bad debt category.
By using our resources wisely and with the help of our physicians, employees and donors who participate in our fundraising events, or with direct donations, we have been able to maintain a strong financial position while accomplishing our mission. Hospital margins in Pueblo are well below 2%, which translates to less than 2 cents for every dollar that is billed. For all those who participate in our fundraising events or make donations we are extremely grateful for your support. The dollars left over after expenses are reinvested in equipment and/or buildings to maintain a state-of-the-art facility that is conducive to healing.
Parkview has earned a reputation of providing high quality healthcare in this region and we are proud of this accomplishment. Other accomplishments we’ve recently achieved include being recognized by Avatar for customer service; achieving the status of a designated Stroke Center from the Joint Commission; earning Total Benchmark Solution’s Best Acute Care Hospital Award and our Home Care department being rated in the top 100 in the nation. We try to exceed the expectations of our customers and make a difference in our community. I encourage you to read on and learn about more of our accomplishments.
