Jim Hadley has been named Starlight Gala Honoree for his leadership and commitment to Parkview Medical Center as well as his generous contributions to the Pueblo community.
Jim Hadley was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1951 to John and Joan Hadley. Jim has an older brother and three younger sisters. The Hadley family moved to Pueblo, Colorado, in 1959 where his father started his practice in Obstetrics and Gynecology. The family moved to Pueblo’s Northside where Jim attended Somerlid, Freed, and Centennial.
Jim’s first introduction to then named Parkview Episcopal Hospital came at ten years old when he stared going to the hospital on Saturdays and Sundays with his father and hanging around the emergency room, doctor’s lounge or the nurses’ station while his father made rounds to see patients.
Jim’s father’s love of flying airplanes was picked up by all three older kids and Jim soloed an airplane at 14 and received his pilot’s license along with his driver’s license on his 16th birthday. Flying was a big part of the Hadley family life with memorable trips throughout the United States, Mexico, Canada and Alaska. Jim attended CSU Fort Collins and went through the Pre-Medicine curriculum. Physiology became his favorite subject and Jim worked under several Physiologists researching pesticide’s effects on migratory water fowl.
Jim met his wife, Barbara, in 1971. She was a student in Psychology at CSU.
During the summer of 1971 Jim was allowed to work at Parkview to get his first taste if medicine. He worked in the surgery ward moving patients to and from surgery and recovery, and then circulating in the surgery suites, and finally as a second scrub tech moving from case to case with Anesthesiologists, Wally Gist and John Serfling. Jim was hooked on Parkview from that summer on.
In April, 1973, the Hadley children’s life took a dramatic change when their parents, John and Doris, died in a private plane accident. Jim’s brother, John and wife Carol had Jim’s sisters, Judy and Jean who were 11 and 9 at the time, move in with them after the accident while trying to balance their own young family. Four months later, after Jim received his Bachelor of Science Degree, he put his dream of going to Medical School on hold. Jim moved back to Pueblo and got a job working at First National Bank as a Teller. In the summer of 1974 Jim bought a home in Belmont and his younger sisters moved in with him.
In 1975, Jim learned what a good salesman he was when he asked Barb to marry him and put off going to graduate school in pursuit of her Ph.D. in Psychology. She moved to Pueblo. Jim’s oldest sister, Joan, got married and Jim, Barb, Judy and Jean lived together until Judy went off to CU and Jean went to CSU.
In 1978 Jim left the banking world for a career in real estate when he joined the Leach Company and met his soon to be partner, Greg Hahn. A year later, Greg and Jim acquired the Pueblo County Franchise for RE/MAX (then a very small real estate brand with less than a 1,000 agents nationwide). Barb supported Jim’s start-up working as a teacher and coach at Pueblo County High School.
In 1983, Jim and Barb moved full-time to Rye and started their family with the birth of daughters Carrie in 1984 and Molly in 1987. Carrie is now studying to receive a Masters Degree in Architectures and Molly recently graduated from CSU and has obtained her E.M.T. Certificate and works at Poudre Valley Hospital. Barb went on to obtain two Masters Degrees and became a Psychology Professor and Metal Health Counselor at CSU Pueblo. Barb has recently started her own counseling center in Belmont.
Jim joined the Board of Directors for both, Parkview Medical Center and U.S. Bank (then Colorado National Bank) in 1984. Michael Pugh was the first CEO to ask Jim to serve on Parkview’s Board. Jim has served as both a board member and chairman of Parkview Medical Center and as a board member and chairman of Parkview Health Systems. He also has served on Parkview Foundation Board. Jim has served on numerous committees and subsidiary Boards of Parkview over the last twenty-five years. Jim also serves as a board member, executive committee members, and finance chair for Spanish Peaks Mental Health Center. Over the years, Jim has participated on numerous District 70 Accountability Committees, YMCA Building Campaign, United Way of Pueblo County, Church Vestry, and Past President of the Pueblo Associate of Realtors Board.
Jim says that Parkview is a passion of his and his board service has been a great learning experience for him. “My service to Parkview could not have happened if I didn’t have the full support of my wife, Barb, who did double duty with the kids and her job so that I could make all of the early morning and late evening meeting over the years.”
Jim’s other passions away from RE/MAX are family vacations, exercising, mountain biking, skiing, sailing and fly fishing.
