Parkview announces recommendations for hospital visitors

(Pueblo, CO October 13, 2009) – Throughout the year, but particularly during flu season, Parkview Medical Center recommends that visitors who are feeling ill avoiding coming to see their loved ones who are admitted into the hospital.

Parkview Medical Center prides itself in providing family centered care where visitors are welcome. However, our top priority is to protect our patients. “We are temporarily discouraging visits to the hospital by people 16 years and younger,” said Eileen Dennis, chief nursing officer at Parkview. “From the perspective of protecting all patients, as well as visitors, we feel that it would be best to limit visits during this flu season.”

Patients who are admitted to the hospital are vulnerable to the flu virus, as well as many other illnesses that sick visitors can bring into the hospital. We discourage you from visiting if you are not feeling well and we ask that if you start feeling ill while in the hospital, to put on a mask. Masks are available throughout the facility, or you may ask a hospital employee to provide one for you.

Dennis also added that if people want to avoid getting the flu or H1N1, a seasonal flu shot, getting the H1N1 vaccine when it is available and hand washing are still the best defenses. “I want to repeat that proper hand washing is incredibly important to stop the spread of the flu,” Dennis said.
