(Pueblo, CO September 15, 2011) - Parkview Medical Center’s Spirit of Women is hosting a fashion-forward, fun-filled, fabulous Spirit Girls’ Night Out SM to inspire women to find “Their Best Health in The Bag” on September 29, 2011. This event will educate women on breast health, the dangers of carrying a too-heavy purse and encourage all women over 40 to schedule their mammogram. This fun and informative event is designed to move participants towards better overall health while reminding women to celebrate and protect their girls – their sisters, friends and their very own “girls”.
Although the primary goal of Spirit Girls’ Night Out is to educate women about their health, it is the action steps that follow that are the real reward. “Our signature Spirit of Women events allow women to come together in a fun environment for health information presented in an empowering format,” said Kirsten Taylor, Parkview’s Director of Health Initiatives/Spirit of Women. “When you combine this celebration of good health with the power of friendship, we hope that women will encourage each other on their path to improved wellness. Parkview’s Spirit Girls’ Night Out is in its third year in Pueblo and gaining in momentum with over 800 women anticipated to come to this year’s event. Our goal is to enlighten, inspire, and empower women in Southern Colorado to take action over their health and the health of their families.”
The focus of the evening will be on prevention and early detection of breast cancer. Aside from non-melanoma skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the US. It is also one of the leading causes of cancer death among women of all races (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Parkview’s Mammography Center will be on hand to help women schedule their mammograms and answer questions about digital mammography. For optimal breast health, it is recommended that women use a three-tiered approach (Mayo Clinic):
1. Breast health awareness, which includes a woman becoming familiar with her breasts in order to identify breast abnormalities or changes, and to inform her doctor of any changes that may need further evaluation;
2. Clinical breast exam performed by a health care provider and recommended annually beginning at age 40;
3. Annual screening mammography beginning at age 40.
The core of Spirit Girls’ Night Out is increasing awareness and fueling action: prevention and early detection save lives! In addition to valuable and relevant breast health education, women will also enjoy music by the Veronika String Quartet, the results of News Channel 13’s Makeover Contest, and scrumptious food and drinks.
Three women from Southern Colorado have been chosen to receive a makeover from a Glam Team comprised of Headlines Salon, Dress Bar, Maurices and Old Navy. Over 100 women were nominated based on their inspirational stories for this incredible opportunity – many nominations came from husbands, daughters and friends who told the story of women who have been through health issues or family tragedy, and through it all have persevered to motivate others in their lives to do the same. The three “glam” women will have a chance to see themselves as the beauties that their families and friends know they are and to share their incredible stories with everyone at Spirit Girls’ Night Out.
Another highlight of the event will be a “Weigh Your Handbag” station where Parkview’s Orthopedic Surgeons will discuss the spine, shoulder and back risks of carrying heavy handbags. Additionally, flu shots will be available for $20 and a host of other specialty physicians will be on-hand to answer questions. The big finish of the evening will be the unveiling of News Channel 13’s Makeover Contest winners who have been chosen based on their inspirational stories. This “don’t miss” event will be held at the Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center on September 29 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The event costs $3 for Spirit of Women members and $5 for non-members but women are encouraged to bypass the registration line by purchasing a VIP ticket online at www.parkviewmc.org. This year’s event sponsors include Spradley Auto Network, Rocky Mountain Eye Center and Banner & Bower, PC; the makeovers are sponsored by Headlines, Dress Barn, Old Navy and Maurices. Spirit Girls’ Night Out is organized and hosted by Parkview Medical Center, a member of the Spirit of Women Hospital Network, with support provided by Good Housekeeping Magazine.
