Where: Pueblo Mall, JC Penny Court, 3567 Dillon Dr., Pueblo, CO
When: Saturday, February 26 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
(Pueblo, CO February 4, 2011) –– Parkview Medical Center and Spirit of Women invite southern Colorado, along with 76 other communities across the US, to the National Day of Dance for Your Health on Saturday, February 26, 2011. Spirit of Women Hospitals across the country have been joining together to take a stand against heart disease for nearly a decade through Day of Dance. The event will combine the fun of dancing with health screenings and consumer education on heart disease and other important health topics.
Although in its seventh year nationwide, this is the fourth year that residents of Pueblo will participate. Nearly 500 residents of all ages are expected to get involved in this event, which will take place at the Pueblo Mall in the JC Penney Court. Nationwide, more than 75,000 people are expected to dance for their health on February 26 in the hopes of creating healthier communities.
Taking place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 26, the event will include demonstrations by local dance studios, education from local physicians, and screenings to remind participants that preventing cardiovascular disease and practicing a healthy lifestyle can be a fun and energizing experience. The first 100 participants are eligible for a free cholesterol screening – please plan on a 10-12 hour fast beforehand.
“We hope this year’s theme of SaturDAY Fever will inspire everyone to come out in their best disco outfit, complete with red shoes, of course,” said Kirsten Taylor, Parkview’s Spirit of Women Director. “At Day of Dance, we’ll hold a red shoe contest open to the entire community, so be sure to put your best foot forward to win a healthy prize.”
Coronary heart disease, which causes heart attack, is the single leading cause of death for American women. Many women believe that cancer is the number one cause of death, but they're wrong. Nearly twice as many women in the US die of heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases than from all forms of cancer, including breast cancer.
Spirit of Women focuses on dance as a way to take steps for a healthier life because dancing can burn as many calories as swimming, walking, or riding a bike (as many as 200-400 calories per hour). Many health benefits may result from dance if it is done on a regular basis as a form of exercise. Benefits include weight maintenance or weight loss, blood pressure and cholesterol management (lowering), increased energy, decreased sadness and depression, increased coordination and muscle strength, and an overall sense of well-being.
