As you can see from the statistics listed below Sexual Assault is a community problem and requires a community response to combat. The devastating effects of sexual assault can last a lifetime but these effects can be significantly reduced if the victim is handled with care, compassion and expertise that begins the moment she/he reports the assault.
Colorado Statistics
- 24% (1 in 4) women have experienced a completed or attempted sexual assault in their lifetime. (CDPHE 1998)
- 6% (1 in 17) men have experienced a completed or attempted sexual assault in their lifetime. (CDPHE 1998)
- 1,794 rapes were reported to Colorado law enforcement in 1997 and if compared to the 1998 Statewide Survey on Sexual Assault, these reports constitute only 16% of the actual sexual assault. It is estimated that for every on SA that is reported. There are at least 6 more that are not reported. (CDHPE/CCASA 1998)
- Sixty to 80 percent of all sexual assaults are committed by an acquaintance. (CDPHE 1998)
- Alcohol and/or date rape drugs are often used to render victims defenseless and lessen the need to use physical force. The availability of date rape drugs and their use is widespread.
- Rape is not an impulse act; more than 70 percent of all rapes are planned.
- Most victims of sexual assault never report the assault.
