For over twenty years, Parkview Medical Center has opened its doors to teenagers wanting to explore career options in healthcare. The ParkTeen Volunteer program gives kids, thirteen and older, a first hand look at the inter-workings of the medical center.
Throughout the summer months, Parkview has thirty-seven ParkTeens working in the hospital by giving clerical support, greeting and orienting patients and visitors to the hospital, working the information desks throughout the hospital, and pitching in to help at the Gift Shoppe as well as the 17th Street Café.
The ParkTeen volunteer program was created to encourage interest in hospital professions, prepare teens for future civic responsibilities as well as for future employment and to provide teens with the personal satisfaction of doing something that enriches the lives of others.
One of the many benefits to being a ParkTeen is the ability to apply for the O. Dale and Ruth E. Harmon ParkTeen Scholarship. Dale Harmon established the Ruth E. Harmon Scholarship Fund for ParkTeens in 1990 in memory of his late wife. O. Dale Harmon passed away in 2005 and his name was added to the memorial scholarship at that time. June Harmon, James and Rosa Harmon, the Parkview Auxiliary and Volunteers support the scholarship fund. The scholarship was created to assist Parkview’s high school volunteers in furthering their education in the healthcare field. The scholarship is awarded annually to a Parkteen who has volunteered a minimum of 100 hours, has demonstrated outstanding volunteer service to Parkview Medical Center and has achieved academic excellence while in school.
