PARKVIEW MEDICAL CENTER honored for outstanding contributions to Patient Safety in Colorado
(Pueblo, CO December 3, 2007) – Parkview Medical Center was recently honored by the Colorado Patient Safety Coalition for the outstanding contributions the medical center made to patient safety in Colorado. Parkview was recognized at the 2007 Patient Safety Conference for the hospital-wide deployment of the IntelliDOT™ CAREt System.
More than 200 physicians, pharmacists, nurses, attorneys and other professionals with a desire to improve the safety of healthcare for citizens of Colorado gathered for the Seventh Annual “Do No Harm” Patient Safety Coalition Conference. The Colorado Patient Safety Coalition enjoys participation from many perspectives, including professionals, institutions, regulators, purchasers and consumers. The participants are not members, but rather individuals and entities wishing to take part in dialogue regarding patient safety. The Colorado Patient Safety Coalition is a registered Colorado nonprofit corporation that has received IRS designation as a 501c3 entity.
Parkview was nominated for this honor based on the hospital-wide reduction in medication errors using a unique, wireless, handheld device call the CAREt system. During medication administration, the handheld technology guides the nurse through the process, receiving prompts and warnings as configured by the hospital’s pharmacy and nursing staff. The system documents information at the bedside, using just one hand. The handheld devices also allow nurses to capture and document vital sign information. Once a nurse using the system has a “near-miss moment” where the advantage of the system is made clear, they become passionate advocates for the technology. Parkview’s number of “near miss events” has decreased nearly 50 percent since the implementation of the CAREt technology.
This revolutionary handheld system allows nurses to work with confidence, knowing that they are providing the highest levels of safety every time they administer medications to their patients.
With the CAREt System, nurses and other caregivers can rely on a single handheld device, communicating live within the hospital environment, check medication safety and document in real time to patient records. Built on a fully customized user interface, the system is easy to use and eliminates the need for traditional keyboards, computer screens and menus. Parkview Medical Center was one of the first hospitals in the United States to install the CAREt System.
