The program is 51 weeks long and begins in July. During the year, students rotate through each of the following departments:
Microbiology: 13 weeks
- Hematology: 9 weeks
- Clinical Chemistry: 13 weeks
- Blood Bank: 8 weeks
- Urinalysis: 3 weeks
In addition to practical work in these departments, students receive weekly units of instruction on subjects pertinent to the theory for that department. A unit of instruction includes a set of objectives, reading assignment, homework assignment, and test on a particular topic. In order for the student to obtain a better understanding of the theory for certain topics, lectures are also given throughout the course of the clinical year. In general, students work in their assigned
department in the morning and have lecture in the afternoon.
Students that successfully complete the program are given a certificate and are eligible to sit for the ASCP Board of Certification. The issuing of this certificate is not contingent upon the student passing any certifying examination.
