Specific Patient Risk Factors
History of Smoking If you smoke...Stop! Smoking doubles your risk of having a stroke.
Drinking Alcohol Limit alcohol intake
Poor diet Eat a balanced diet that is low in sodium and fat
Sedentary Lifestyle Exercise at moderate intensity daily for 30 minutes
Hypertension A blood pressure consistently higher than 120/80. Things you can do to control it are diet and exercise. Take medications as prescribed and work with your provider to monitor and reduce your blood pressure.
Previous Stroke/TIA Know the symptoms of stroke. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
Diabetes Mellitus Work with your provider to get your blood sugar level under control. Aim for a hemoglobinA1Cof < 7. Diet and exercise can help reduce your blood sugar levels. Take medication as prescribed.
Atrial Fibrillation Work with your provider to control this problem and take your medication as prescribed.
High Cholesterol Eat a low fat, low cholesterol balanced diet. Take medications as prescribed and work with your provider to help control Carotid Artery Disease and high cholesterol.
Know the symptoms of stroke. If you experience any of the symptoms seek medical attention immediately and ACT FAST. |
