The mission of Parkview Medical Center is to provide quality healthcare services that improve the health of our community. One way we can do this is to provide a healthy environment at Parkview for our patients, visitors and staff (including volunteers, medical staff, affiliates, vendors and contractors). Therefore, we have implemented a new policy to create smoke-free campuses. The smoke-free initiative is a concrete way to demonstrate Parkview’s ongoing commitment to healthier living.
In conjunction with our smoke-free policy, Pueblo City Council passed Ordinance 7938 to prohibit smoking on public right-of-ways surrounding hospitals and hospital owned and/or leased properties. Smoking is not allowed on sidewalks, lawns, tree lawns, or alleys.
Parkview has partnered with Pueblo City-County Health Department’s Tobacco Program (Pueblo Tobacco Education & Prevention Partnership) to create a smoke-free setting on all property leased and owned by Parkview Medical Center. This initiative will provide a healthier setting for all.
Dangers of tobacco use are well documented and linked to many illnesses and loss of productivity. More than 4,500 Coloradoans die each year from tobacco-related illness. There is no risk-free level of secondhand smoke exposure according to the CDC. A person standing 20 inches from a burning cigarette may breathe in 10 times more cancer-causing chemicals than the smoker (raisesmokefreekids.com).
