Parkview Urges Community to be Vigilant through Holiday Season

The start of the holiday season begins this week and Parkview urges the Pueblo community and southern Colorado to remain vigilant on the fight against COVID-19.

Parkview is currently experiencing the highest number of COVID-19 patients this year, along with a high need of non-COVID-19 critical care patients.  A new team from National Disaster Medical System arrived last week at Parkview to continue efforts of additional hospital beds and staffing.

“It is unfortunate we are experiencing these high volumes of COVID-19 patients, when we have a tool in the vaccine to combat this virus,” stated Renee Elwell, Chief Nursing Officer for Parkview Health System.

Approximately 80% of COVID-19 hospitalizations at Parkview are unvaccinated and 90% of COVID-19 patients on intensive care floors are unvaccinated.  The hospital remains at capacity with patients often experiencing long wait times for hospital beds in the Emergency Department.

“It is not ideal nor how we want to practice medicine by having to hold patients in the Emergency Department while they wait for a hospital bed.  However, until we get a handle on this virus in the community and get vaccinated, it will remain, unfortunately, our reality.  We are urging Pueblo to stay vigilant this holiday season.  Getting vaccinated, wearing a mask, washing your hands and avoiding large crowds will help your local hospital,” stated Leslie Barnes, President and CEO.

Additionally, Parkview is reminding community members the Emergency Department is open and taking patients with life-threating and emergency medical conditions.  Labor and delivery also remain open at Parkview.

For COVID-19 testing, please visit the Pueblo Mall testing site or the Colorado State Fairgrounds.  A calendar of daily vaccine clinics and locations providing vaccine in Pueblo is at

Visiting restrictions at Parkview remain the same.
