Dr. Terhakopian is a board-certified psychiatrist. He earned his M.D. through the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), the only military medical school in the United States, in 2002. He completed a broad-based medical internship and psychiatry residency training at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where he treated hundreds of Soldiers and their families affected by the trauma of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. He then earned his M.P.H. back at USUHS and completed a fellowship in Disaster and Trauma Psychiatry in 2008. Many thousands of patient encounters have honed Dr. Terhakopian's skills in the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of depression, anxiety, alcohol/substance use disorders and particularly PTSD. Because of his training in medicine in addition to the social and psychological sciences, Dr. Terhakopian is able to also assess for medical conditions which can and in many cases contribute to mental health problems. This type of comprehensive evaluation significantly improves the odds of treatment success. Terhakopian has authored several manuscripts and book chapters regarding PTSD and effects of anxiety on health and well-being.
